Abstract: For the study of quantum optical processes in nanostructures a Hamiltonian formulation of quantum electrodynamics is obviously desirable. An approach closely following the kind of traditional coupled-mode equation strategy that is applied in classical problems would clearly help in capturing the essential physics. But problems arise in constructing such an approach even for dispersionless and transparent models of the material media because of the essentially relativistic nature of the photon. As well, in many nanostructures of interest the effects of material dispersion and sometimes even absorption cannot be disregarded. We discuss a strategy for constructing a “user friendly” QED for nanostructures.
